The importance of a diverse hiring panel

There is a lot to be said for diversity from the top down of any firm but when it comes to decision making capacity for hiring, this may have a wave effect from the bottom up. The pool of diverse talent form graduate level has been on a steady increase across the financial services industry and at a senior level, there has slowly but surely been a shift in diversity within leadership.

Diversity at any level is essential, however, when hiring individuals from a diverse background into a firm, there is a lot to be said for the firm's diversity being evidenced rather than simply discussed. When interviewing for a role, the first meetings which are had are the ones which make the most impactful impressions. Therefore, when seeking to hire diverse talent, it is crucial to have a diverse hiring panel. This can not only help to eradicate unconscious biases and lead to a more advanced working culture, but from a candidate perspective, a diverse hiring panel creates a far more attractive and accepting environment in which people are more likely to want to work.

At Intel, the diversity of hires increased from 31% to 45% of hires being women or people of colour after the company required interview panels to include at least two women and/or employees from underrepresented groups.
