Women in finance: masculine culture

There has been a highly positive industry-wide shift in the promotion and conversation surrounding the importance of attaining a diverse workforce. When considering women in finance, the proportion of women within the industry is steadily on the rise, with the junior level showing great improvement. However, although the numbers are continuing to have a positive increase, it is important to consider the cultural shift which is necessary for women with a historically male-dominated industry to feel truly comfortable within their working environment.

The industry stereotype is undoubtably masculine, which can create a challenging environment for women to be working in. Therefore, it is essential that the industry recognises the importance of not only hiring women into the industry, but ensuring that the previously masculine culture within the industry is tackled. This will ultimately enhance happiness within the workplace, retention, and create a more attractive environment to promote diversity across the financial services industry.

The culture of the finance industry poses another difficulty. The stereotypical banker is perceived as aggressive, transactional and dominating, traits which are traditionally characterized as masculine. Thus, women in finance may feel the need to adjust to compete in a male environment, and this constant feeling of needing to prove themselves puts undue pressure on women’s mental health.
