Inclusion in finance: Neurodiversity

The conversation of diversity continues to open up throughout the investment industry and has come a long way with regards to the disclosure, acceptance, and promotion of individuals from diverse backgrounds. The most commonly discussed and publicised, being gender, culture and ethnicity. For obvious reasons, promotion of diversity from visibly detectable traits, are much easier to advocate, but there are other forms of diversity which are less easy to detect, therefore going unnoticed and less readily discussed.

The investment industry has been trying to open up the conversation surrounding neurodiversity. "Although the latest estimates suggest around 15% of the UK population are neurodivergent, anecdotal evidence suggests the proportion is higher in certain sectors, including the investment industry". Lack of recognition has led to individuals feeling as though they cannot disclose their neurodivergence due to fear of misunderstanding.

Whether or not to disclose neurodivergence is completely personal and subjective, however, in our recent experience, the investment industry has shown a great level of acceptance to encourage neurodivergent candidates to share this with them to provide the correct understanding and support that the individual may need. This is a brave step for someone at any stage of their career, however, it is important that neurodivergence is discussed and promoted equally to any other diverse background in order to be a wholly inclusive industry.

There are many good reasons why individuals choose not to share details about their neurodivergence with colleagues. But we also know that they are more likely to in businesses that are genuinely committed to creating an inclusive work culture. The benefits are clear: not only is it an ethical duty to provide all employees with the opportunities and support they need to be their best at work, evidence shows many neurodiverse employees bring significant ‘diversity of thought' to their employers.
